The Best Portraits Taken In History Are Never Posed

What Do I Mean?

"Within every man and woman a secret is hidden, and as a photographer it is my task to reveal it if I can. The revelation, if it comes at all, will come in a small fraction of a second with an unconscious gesture, a gleam of the eye, a brief lifting of the mask that all humans wear to conceal their innermost selves from the world. In that fleeting interval of opportunity the photographer must act or lose his prize." - Yousuf Karsh. One of my favorite quotes from an all time great photographer. The true character of a human is exposed for a brief moment, and for that moment, there lies the magic in a great photo. Take for example the picture I took of my friend above, I remember incidentally taking that picture after trying to configure my camera settings. While I was messing around with my camera (still a newbie at the time). My friend was getting a little impatient and frustrated. I saw the face she made and in an instance I didn't think twice about my camera settings and took the picture, I am pretty sure it was some janky settings, but I didn't care I knew I just captured "The Secret" in my friend.
